Complete Restoration Projects Maintaining Originality
For the last two years we have been running John Saunders’ ex-works Metro 6R4 on ‘Slowly Sideways’ events. We carried out a complete restoration on this car, including body, electrics, engine and transmission during 2011.
We have many years experience in restoring Race and Road cars from the 1950’s and 1960’s, and have applied this knowledge and experience to restoring Group B rally cars and now have specialist Rally Technicians in house.
We are currently in the process of restoring another Group B rally car – namely a Lancia Rally 037 which is due to be completed this year.
Group B Rallysport – MG Metro 6R4 – 1986
After Group B was banned from international competition, this 6R4 was sold to an American collector. Still untouched from its retirement on the RAC Rally of 1986, the car was displayed for 20 years in a Las Vegas museum. Brought back to the UK in 2011, the car was in remarkably original condition with its Toivonen and Wilson seats, the original RAC scrutineering stickers and even one of the road books still in the car. Austin Rover never reported the car as exported, so on its return to the UK it was reunited with its original registration plates C96 KOG and the logbook shows just one previous owner – Austin Rover Motorsport. This Metro has been carefully restored by IN Racing and takes part in selected events for collector’s cars.
Yesterday: Harri Toivonen/Neil Wilson, RAC Rally 1986
This Metro 6R4 was first used by Malcolm Wilson on the 1986 Tour de Corse and was one of the lightweight special 6R4s prepared for tarmac events. Then it was repainted in Unipart colours and was driven by Harri Toivonen on the 1000 Lakes and RAC rallies. In Finland it finished 8th overall and on the RAC it retired with a broken engine.
